Day 190: Wales Coastal Path

D190: PWLLHELI to MACHROES

Monday 29th September 2025

Today miles: 17.5 Total miles: 3119.9

Following a chilled out rest day yesterday I’m excitedly returning to the coastal path today. There’s a half mile walk through the holiday park before I even get to the coastal path. The path firstly runs along the edge and then behind the holiday park. There’s a good mix of sandy beach and dirt track walking for the first couple of miles. I encountered several friendly people, the usual assortment of early morning dog walkers and joggers. At the headland of Pen-ychain there’s a trig point at only twenty three metres above sea level. Shortly after I dropped down through a large caravan park onto the pebbly beach for a solitary three mile walk towards Pwllheli town.

I stopped at the end of the beach and boiled some water for my breakfast cereal and morning coffee before climbing up from the beach and walking around Pwllheli Marina. There’s a nice dirt path along the edge of the two mile beach all the way to Llanbedrog. There’s then a set of solid concrete steps which climbs the hill overlooking Llanbedrog There’s a strange rusty metallic sculpture on top of the hill. The ‘Tin Man’ has been looking down from the headland since 2002 and it is the latest replacement for the original wooden figurehead which stood there until vandals destroyed it, many years ago. The headland named Mount Pleasant is covered with heather but there’s several wide paths giving easy access to the area. On the other side of the headland is the Warren Caravan Park which stretches along the coast for more than a mile. There’s also several large and expensive looking glass fronted homes close to the beach.

I arrived on the edge of a small town named Abersoch and after crossing over a narrow waterway named Afon Soch I then walked around the edge of the pretty town and skirted around the inland edge of the Abersoch Golf Club. I bumped into a nice couple and we walked together for a last mile into Machroes. They wished me luck as I continued into Machroes village centre to try and locate the Beach View caravan park. I took several wrong turns and probably walked an unnecessary quarter of a mile but I managed to maintain a sense of humour and finally arrived at the caravan park around 6pm.

It’s a really nice location, good value for money with excellent facilities. I managed to have a hot shower before settling down and having something nice and hot to eat. A good days walking in overcast but dry conditions.
