D175: MARLOES to BROAD HAVEN

Despite (light) rain and high wind during the night I managed to have a fairly settled sleep. I was about to set off around 8am when I accepted an invitation from my fellow campers to the campsites communal barn to have a coffee, bacon sarnie and a chat. Ten minutes after entering the barn there was an almighty thunder storm complete with flashes of lightning and torrential rain. I was so pleased that I accepted the invitation and avoided the heavy rain. I happily set off, with a full stomach around thirty minutes later. The first section of path was challenging to walk along. It consisted of a three inch deep by twelve inch wide trench in the ground which I found hard to walk along, particularly in the high wind. I was blown off the path and into the stinging nettles several times. I was in a really good mood and found this to be pretty amusing. The views were decent as I crossed the cliffs at Musselwick Sands with only one muddy descent to tackle. The muddy trench continued for a further two miles until I reached St Brides Haven. I was able to find shelter from the wind and made myself a hot drink before continuing.

The route beyond St Brides Haven was much smoother. The path was flat and reasonably dry for the next two miles until the short descent into Mill Haven. There’s several glacial boulders along the path and one of these has a strange bore hole worn by nature or deliberately drilled through. I arrived in Little Haven and it’s still way too early for booking into the youth hostel. I grabbed some lunch from the grocery store and then sat killing time looking out into St Brides Bay.

I eventually moved off due to the strong wind making me feel cold and uncomfortable. A further half mile along the path I reached Broad Haven and the youth hostel. I was able to purchase a coffee and sit in the communal living room whilst drying out my tent, charging my power bank and washing some dirty clothes. A relatively short but enjoyable day.
