Day 172: Wales Coastal Path

D172: ANGLE to PEMBROKE DOCK

Tuesday 17th June 2025

Today miles: 16.6 Total miles: 2831.2

It’s the last day of this particular trip and I’ll be heading home early tomorrow morning. I’ve booked myself into a guest house for tonight which is only a few minutes walk from the coastal path and the local shops. The campsite has a small store inside of a converted caravan which surprisingly was open at 8am. I was able to pick up a few snacks and a hot drink. The first couple of miles was a nice breezy walk around Angle Bay and towards the oil refinery at Eastington. The path was flat and pleasant along farm tracks and across grassy fields. On arriving close to the oil refinery I picked up a minor road and also spotted several pipelines and jetties jutting out into Milford Haven.

I reached a small hill close to Fort Popton. There’s a seat at the top of the hill with views across the estuary where I took my first short break. Crossing the pipelines into the estuary was interesting and there’s some brightly coloured pedestrian bridges to cross. I also spotted a few fishermen who were hoping to catch a bite in the estuary. There’s a couple of easy grass covered hills to climb until I reached the edge of Pembroke River, this is a tributary of the Milford Haven estuary. The path took me along a minor road which is cut off during high tide near to Hundleton. Thankfully the tide is out and the road was dry and easily walkable. A half mile later I reached the Southern edge of Pembroke. I hadn’t expected to come across a castle in Pembroke but there’s a small castle close to the river in a pretty location, it was ideal for an extended break. I few minutes after setting off through the nearby park I saw a male walking along the path with what I thought was a large dog. Weirdly it turned out he was out for a walk with a Shetland Pony.

After crossing over the River Pembroke the route follows a nice path along the edge of the river through a narrow strip of trees. Eventually the trees disappeared and the route continued through farmers fields filled with sheep and cattle. I took another short break and contacted the landlord of my accommodation to confirm the key code. I walked a little further down the riverside towards Pennar Mouth before turning towards Pembroke Dock. I walked around Pembroke golf course and eventually reached the large Tesco store where I left the coastal path and head to my accommodation.
I grabbed a large takeaway pizza and four cans of lager which I later enjoyed in my room. I’ll be catching the train back to Alnwick early tomorrow morning after three weeks of walking. I’ll be back in three months to hopefully complete the Wales Coastal Path.
