Day 169: Wales Coastal Path

D169: PENDINE to MANORBIER

Saturday 14th June 2025

Today miles: 17.8 Total miles: 2785.4

The on-site cafe which apparently serves delicious breakfast baps doesn’t actually open until 9am, that’s about two hours too late for me. I managed to (easily) find the short well defined path back to the coast. The route immediately descends and then climbs across Marros Sands. I had an option to walk across the sand but wasn’t sure there was access off the beach further down the path. I looked on the map and physically checked but couldn’t see a way off the beach so continued to go up and down the hillside instead. Not sure how many wooden gates I went through, they seemed to appear every couple of hundred metres and there were at least thirty of them over the next couple of miles. Around a mile before I reached Amroth there’s a minor road which runs into the small coastal village. It’s still early and unfortunately nothing is open. There’s a nice character pub named ‘The Smugglers’ which I’d have liked to have visited but it’s way too early. I did stop and made I myself a hot drink on the side of the road.

The route beyond was enjoyable and I had some spectacular views out across the cliffs and the water. By the time I had reached Saundersfoot things had opened up and I was able to grab some snacks, a huge steak pastie and another hot drink. The town was busy, particularly around the harbour area. I stayed in town for an hour or so before moving on. There a short climb into Rhode Wood and a nice walk through the trees. After Monkstone Beach there’s a steep climb down into Lodge Valley. By the time I had reached the outskirts of Tenby the sky had complete cleared of any clouds and there’s a beautiful blue sky. The tide was out and I got see a lot of Tenby’s nice sandy beach. I decided to stick to walking along the promenade rather than walk along the beach and on reaching the harbour area I spend a little bit of time looking around. It’s a nice town and somewhere I like to revisit in the future.

Leaving the harbour I removed my socks and shoes and walked the one mile along South Beach and The Burrows before the short ascent up onto Giltar Point. The next two miles are across relatively flat grass fields and several more wooden gates beyond Penally and Lydstep. It was getting relatively late in the day and I needed to find somewhere to stop. I tried the Youth Hostel at Manorbier but like many others it’s now exclusive use only. There were lots of teens running around so I guessed they were fully booked. Thankfully there’s a decent campsite nearby and I managed to find a pitch for tonight as the sun was going down. It’s basic but it has everything that I need.
