Day 130: English Coastal Path.

D130: LIZARD POINT to MULLION

Wednesday 1st May 2024

Today miles: 7.4 Total miles: 2153.7

After a relatively late sleep I picked up my dry shoes and my now fully charged power bank from Henry. It was so, so nice to be putting on clean, dry clothes this morning. It took me around fifteen minutes to reach the coastal path and then soon after I passed by Lizard Lighthouse. A few minutes later I reached Lizard Point, the furthest Southern point of mainland Great Britain. The views from this area are spectacular. With so few miles to walk today I wasn’t in any rush, so I had myself something to eat and drink at the Lizard Point cafe. I walked as far as I dared to the edge of the cliff and took several selfies. I then posted it to friends who I knew were at work, in the hope of making them envious.
The weather was perfect and I felt like I was floating along the path in my super dry shoes. Unusually after leaving a tourist hot spot like Lizard Point the crowds of people didn’t dwindle and there’s literally hundreds of people walking along the coastal path. A mile later I entered the Lizard National Nature Reserve. Eventually the flatish route dropped down into Kynance Cove. The cove itself can get cut off by the high tide however there’s an interestingly narrow hundred metre section of pebble beach and rocks which myself and several others managed to scramble along. Many others just turned around and decided not to risk a soaking. There’s an isolated cafe at Kynance and it’s in a spectacular location. I sat down, removed my socks/shoes and enjoyed just looking out towards Asparagus Island and the sea stacks, with a cup of coffee and a second breakfast.

After leaving Kynance Cove the crowds did finally begin to dwindle. I made my way slowly across Kynance cliffs, I’ve only got about three miles left to walk and it’s only just gone lunchtime. I stopped regularly to enjoy the views.
I had downloaded ‘The Hobbit’ audiobook, read by Andy Serkis onto my mobile last week. I’ve been playing it occasionally throughout the day but unfortunately I’ve found it hard going and longwinded and have now decided just to stick to playing music. I had booked myself into Penzance youth hostel for tomorrow night and the only appropriate campsite I could find between Lizard and Penzance is located at Teneriffe Farm. There are other campsite further along the coastal path but for a variety of reasons they weren’t appropriate.

A short day filled with many excellent views. I arrived at the campsite much earlier than I had anticipated and I now have more than six hours to entertain myself before sunset. I had expected others to arrive at the campsite, but no, tonight I’ve got the entire place to myself.
